5 Dream Picnic Destinations for a UK Road Trip

Few things are more quintessentially British than a picnic, and when paired with a road trip through some of the UK’s most iconic locations, it’s pure magic. Picture yourself nibbling treats on a Hyde Park blanket, exploring the woods of Winnie-the-Pooh, or imagining a Bridgerton scene in the rolling hills of Bath. I’ve put together a list of my own personal dream picnic destinations right here in the UK, each steeped in charm, history, and its own unique inspiration.

So grab your hamper, a cosy blanket, and join me in dreaming of these picture-perfect picnic spots.

1. Hyde Park, London - A Fortnum & Mason Affair

Can you get more British than a Fortnum & Mason picnic in Hyde Park?

Hyde Park has been London’s leafy oasis for centuries, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than with a luxury Fortnum & Mason hamper in tow. Think of it as a touch of royalty with smoked salmon sandwiches, English cheeses, and a delightful array of cakes - yes, please! The setting is a perfect mix of city buzz and serene green space, where you can relax by the Serpentine, enjoy the gentle sounds of the fountains, and indulge in a spot of people-watching (one of my favourite pastimes!).

What I’d Pack: Fortnum & Mason’s famous smoked salmon, Scotch eggs, a selection of cheeses, and perhaps some English sparkling wine. And don’t forget a pot of Earl Grey tea and shortbread for that extra British touch. Dreamy, isn’t it?

2. Ashdown Forest, East Sussex - A Winnie-the-Pooh Picnic

Channel your inner Christopher Robin in the enchanting Ashdown Forest.

If you’ve ever dreamt of stepping into the Hundred Acre Wood, Ashdown Forest in East Sussex is as close as you’ll get. This charming woodland inspired A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, and I can only imagine how magical it would feel to picnic among the tall trees and heather-covered hills. Perfect for a family outing, Ashdown invites little ones (and grown-ups too!) to look out for Poohsticks Bridge and the iconic spots from the stories.

What I’d Pack: I’d keep it simple and child-friendly, think honey sandwiches (a nod to Pooh, of course), some fresh fruit, and a thermos of warm cider or hot chocolate to sip as we explore. And maybe a few gingerbread biscuits for that cosy touch.

3. The Lake District, Cumbria - Wordsworth, Potter & National Trust Dreams

Picnic in the landscape that inspired Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and the very birthplace of the National Trust.

The Lake District is poetry itself, and it’s no wonder both Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter were utterly enchanted by it. Between shimmering lakes and rolling hills, you could set up a picnic spot worthy of literary legend. This is the place for dreamers, wanderers, and anyone who loves a good view with their sandwich. And at spots like Hill Top (Potter’s former home), it’s easy to feel the magic that inspired the National Trust, one of my favourite things in the world.

What I’d Pack: A hearty spread with fresh-baked bread, Cumberland sausage rolls, local cheeses, and a flask of strong tea to keep us warm in the brisk Lake District air. And perhaps a slice of gingerbread from Grasmere village to add a little sweetness to the adventure.

4. Highclere Castle, Hampshire - Downton Abbey Dreams

Channel your inner Crawley with an elegant picnic tea in the gardens of Highclere Castle.

For fans of Downton Abbey like myself, Highclere Castle is a pilgrimage I dream of making. Imagine yourself on the perfectly manicured lawns, indulging in a picnic afternoon tea arranged by the castle itself (as no outside food is permitted on the grounds). Highclere offers a delightful picnic tea in a beautifully curated box, letting you enjoy an elegant al fresco experience without the need to pack your own. Just imagine the castle as your backdrop, a selection of treats at hand, and perhaps the feeling that Lady Mary herself might appear at any moment.

What I’d Enjoy: Highclere’s picnic tea comes with a variety of refined delights, think finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and a range of sweets and savouries that would do Downton proud. To complete the moment, you might even sip some sparkling elderflower or a classic cup of English tea as you soak up the grandeur. And who’s up for a spot of croquet?

5. Studland Beach, Dorset - Famous Five Adventure

Step back to simpler times on Studland Beach, inspired by Enid Blyton’s Famous Five adventures.

For a seaside picnic that takes you right into the pages of an Enid Blyton novel, Studland Beach in Dorset is a gem. I can just imagine the Famous Five gathering their picnic on the sandy shores with views of Old Harry Rocks in the distance. I’d love to pop into Corfe Castle village on the way to pick up local treats from the Dragon’s Bakery, where you can grab crusty bread, local cheese, and slices of Dorset apple cake.

What I’d Pack: Go classic and coastal with fresh bread, creamy cheese, pasties from the village bakery, and, of course, a slab of Dorset apple cake to finish. Don’t forget a flask of tea or lemonade for that Famous Five touch.

Let the Picnic Adventures Begin!

From literary landscapes to historic gardens, these dream picnic destinations are packed with personality and quintessentially British charm. Each spot offers a unique experience, weaving together history, nature, and a touch of storybook magic. Wherever the road might lead, I’ll be ready with my basket, a blanket, and a scenic view.

I’d love to hear from you too, do you have a dream picnic destination? And if you visit any of these spots, please share your adventures with me. Here’s to keeping the picnic tradition alive, wherever the road may take us.

Love, Gemma xx
