Must-Visit Picnic Spots in Somerset: Winter Edition

When you think of picnics, winter might not be the first season that comes to mind. But there’s something undeniably magical about a cold-weather alfresco gathering. The frosted landscapes, peaceful surroundings, and excuse to wrap up in cosy layers make a winter picnic an adventure like no other.

Somerset’s natural beauty truly shines in winter, offering plenty of idyllic spots to enjoy a hearty meal and soak in the season. Here are my favourite winter picnic spots in Somerset — perfect for crisp days and scenic views.

1. Glastonbury Tor

Few places in Somerset feel as mystical in winter as Glastonbury Tor. Perched atop a hill, this iconic landmark offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, especially when mist lingers in the valleys below. The quiet serenity of the season adds to the Tor’s magical atmosphere. Plus, the brisk walk to the top is an excellent way to warm up before your picnic.

What I’d Pack: A thermos of Parsnip and Apple Soup, crusty bread, and some Spiced Apple and Walnut Muffins to enjoy as you take in the view.

2. Wells Cathedral Green

Wells Cathedral is a sight to behold in any season, but its grandeur feels especially magical in winter. The quiet charm of the Green, paired with the Gothic architecture of the cathedral, makes it an inspiring spot for a peaceful picnic. The seasonal stillness creates a calm, reflective atmosphere, and the nearby shops make it easy to pick up treats if you’re short on time.

What I’d Pack: Warm sausage rolls, mini quiches, and a flask of hot chocolate. Treat yourself to something sweet from a local bakery for dessert.

3. Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor

For those who love dramatic winter landscapes, Dunkery Beacon on Exmoor is a must. As the highest point in Somerset, it offers sweeping views of the moorland, which can look utterly enchanting when frosted with snow or bathed in low winter light. The wild beauty of Exmoor in winter is unmatched. Dunkery Beacon’s remote feel makes it perfect for those looking to escape and reconnect with nature.

What I’d Pack: Hearty pasties, a flask of tomato and basil soup, and a slice of rich fruitcake. Don’t forget a thermos of strong tea to keep you warm.

4. Hestercombe Gardens

Hestercombe’s winter gardens are a delight for anyone who appreciates the quieter beauty of the season. The formal gardens take on an enchanting quality in winter, and there are plenty of spots to spread out your picnic while admiring the carefully tended grounds. The gardens are quieter this time of year, giving you the chance to enjoy the stunning landscapes without the usual crowds.

What I’d Pack: Warm roasted vegetable tarts, cheddar scones, and a flask of creamy hot chocolate. A slice of Dundee cake would be a lovely addition to your winter spread.

Please note: To keep Hestercombe litter free, picnics are not allowed in the gardens, however, they do have a dedicated picnic area at the entrance.

5. Porlock Weir

For a picnic with coastal charm, Porlock Weir is a magical winter spot. The rugged shoreline, historic harbour, and peaceful atmosphere make it an excellent location for a seaside picnic with a difference. The bracing sea air and the dramatic winter skies are perfect for those who love a touch of the wild. It’s also a great spot for photography, with its unique mix of natural and historic features.

What I’d Pack: A few muffins and gingerbread biscuits, not forgetting. flask of hot tea but nothing beats fresh fish and chips when you are at the beach.

Tips for Winter Picnics in Somerset

1. Dress for the Weather: Layers, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy boots are essential for winter outings.

2. Choose Comfort Foods: Focus on hearty, warming dishes like soups, pies, and hot drinks that travel well.

3. Pack Thoughtfully: Bring insulated containers, thick blankets, and a groundsheet to keep everyone comfortable.

4. Plan Ahead: Winter days are short, so make the most of the daylight by picnicking around midday.

Winter picnics may take a little extra preparation, but they offer a unique way to enjoy the beauty of the season. There’s something wonderfully rewarding about braving the crisp air, tucking into warm comfort food, and soaking up Somerset’s winter landscapes.
